M Ulti S Cale Dynamics of G Maune Waves is a DFG funded research group (for 1798).
The aim of the research unit (RU) is to gain insight into the multi-scale dynamics of the internal gravity waves of the atmosphere in relation to their spatial, temporal and spectral distribution as well as the corresponding physical processes. This leads to improved representation of gravity waves in weather forecast and climate models that will increase the reliability of global weather and climate dictionary. Research is organized among the three topic distributions, processes and impact in terms of gravity waves. This is pursued by theoretical development, modeling, laboratory tests and field campaigns with radar, lidar and airborne measurements. The research unit is designed for two phases of three years each. Financing for the second phase is granted and last until the end of 2021.
Trust in the climate prediction can only be won if the present climate is properly modeled for the right reasons. Currently there is a debate on dynamic features such as the predicted improvement of the Brewer-Dobson circulation, the dynamic downlight clutch of the stratosphere on the troposphere and ozone super recovery. A particularly large source of uncertainty in this context are internal gravity waves (GWS), which can not be solved by current chemical climate models and instead are represented by largely consistent parameterizations. The research unit (RU) formulates explicit models of GW excitement, propagation and dissipation on physically and mathematically consistent manner. These are tested via process-resolving numerical modeling and measurements. Particular attention is paid to multi-scale interactions of gravity waves with turbulence with the balanced river and unconsistent small scale with large scale with a large scale of GWS. Models to be developed lead to a uniform parameterization of GWS, from their sources to dissipation. Both the GW parameterization and global GW approval and local GW resolution modeling are used to quantify and reduce uncertainty in understanding the GW effects on the atmospheric edition, the large-scale dynamic processes in the atmosphere and climate change. Efforts are based on a narrow interdisciplinary interaction of mathematics, theory, high-resolution numerical modeling and measurements of the wave processes themselves and their effects on the global scale. This combination of methods is used because only measurements keep the direct link to reality, only the theory allows to understand, and since only a high-resolution modeling can offer a detailed diagnosis. In MS-Gwaves ten institutes, their experimental, computational and theoretical skills suggest to tackle in these research topics. The long-term profits from the RU should be:
