The English Major

Declaration of the major

If you have completed most of the areas of the areas of the Colleagues of the Arts and Sciences, and they have enrolled in the prerequisites for the most important than detailed versions to explain their English major at any time. The requirement

Students can take one of two ways in the major.

1. In the recommended path, the students fill a course with an engl 2500 level with a note of C or better. This course prepares students for departmental course work with Upper Division and also offers three hours of credit in the direction of the Major.
2. in the alternative way, a student who takes in the department (3000-level or higher, in the literature not creative writing) with an average level of B in the courses, the major can be in an English without an average class 2500-Level course. Again, these courses offer the Major a credit.

the degree program

The in English degree requires ten courses (30 credits) as indicated below. All courses must be on the upper division stage (numbered 3000 or higher) with the exception of the Single ENG 2500-level presex.

• two courses in the "history of literature in English" sequence: engl 3001 (only case) and 3002 (spring only).
• a course in the literature before 1700.
• a course in the literature of .
• a 4000 seminar of 4000 in the literature.
• election courses to bring the total number of courses to ten. Most students need five electives, one of which will be the 2500-level price, in addition to the fulfillment of the above requirements.

Additional rules

.
• Eight of the ten courses for the major must be included in the English department at UVA. With permission of the director of Bachelor's studies, up to two most important electives can either be in other departments on the campus or as a transferred credit of other institutions, including study outland programs. The courses taken outside the department may not meet distribution requirements.
• One of the two courses from outside the department, which may count as a major electoral foot can be in the literature of another language as English, which is taught either in this language or in the translation. These courses can be taught at 2000-level or higher. Grammar and composition courses do not count.
• Overall no more than three courses can fall under the write program rubric (ENWR and ENCW).
• A minimum gt0 of 2.0 in large courses is required. Courses where a student receives a note lower than C- does not count on the major.

Independent study

.
• Only one semester of the independent study can be counted on the English major. The students can use to take independent study only if they have completed four 3000 or 4000-stage courses in English, and they have reached a large GPA of at least 3,300. Independent study enables significant flexibility, without formal limitations for the type of project as long as a faculty member is ready to conduct the independent study, and the proposed course does not duplicate, which is already available in regular departmental services. In order to request an independent degree program, students should apply from the CEO of the Studium of Studying in the semester in the semester, in which they want to pursue their project. English Minor

Students who are smaller in English must complete 18 hours of English courses.With the exception of a single English 2500 level course, everything must be on the 3000-standing or above. These must include English 3001 and 3002. Overall, no more than two courses can fall under the write program rubric (ENWR and ENCW).

English student association

The English student association brings together English majors and interested parties, socially, creative and academically, as they navigate their time in the UVA and prepare for the future. The group is structured by monthly general meetings, including foods, presentations presented by Students, departmental announcements and programs, which are geared towards career development, belong. The organization also operates a mentorship network to connect billigings in a peer consulting system and alumni to study students for career advice. The English student association tries to promote, inspire, inspire and create its members to cultivate relationships to build dreams and establish new realities in UVA.
